JAVIER MUGUERZA
The most influential Spanish philosopher of recent decades, Don Javier Muguerza Carpintier (1936-2019), was born here. Author of works such as "Hopeless Reason" or "From Perplexity: Essay on Ethics, Reason and Dialogue."
In his opinion, "dissent is as important or more important than consensus, and from the point of view of the future of reason, if reason has any future today, it would seem that dissent is really decisive."
Muguerza returned to Coín invited by the PROCURE association, whose objectives included recovering the human heritage of the municipality. Since then he has participated and organized up to 6 philosophy conferences held between 2000 and 2018.
''He joked that the notable presence of philosophers in Coín was only surpassed by the Athens of Pericles, and that it could perhaps be due to the beneficial effects of the waters of El Nacimiento, the spring that irrigates the town''.
Thanks to him, the best names in contemporary Spanish philosophy passed through Coín, such as Celia Amorós or Victoria Camps among others.
He always worked in pursuit of education which, according to his own words, he should encourage, "intellectual restlessness, moral nonconformity and a critical spirit."
All the speeches that he gave in his hometown and that he addressed to this town were true lessons in ethics and commitment. In this sense, he defended the protection of his Cultural Heritage through the PROCURE association and the García Agüera Foundation. He also spoke out in favor of his Natural Heritage, in defense of the Llano de Matagallar and sponsoring the performance of "An Enemy of the People."
